History of W.S Rendra

Willibrord Surendra Broto Rendra (born Solo, 7 November 1935) was a renowned poet who is often dubbed as the "Peacock". He founded the Theatre Workshop in Yogyakarta in 1967 and also in Depok Rendra Theatre Workshop. Since his college career he has actively writing short stories and essays in various magazines. Renda is the son of R. Cyprian Sugeng Brotoatmodjo and Raden Ayu Catharina Ismadillah.

his father is a teacher of Indonesian and Javanese language in Catholic schools, Solo, in addition to the traditional playwright, while his mother was a dancer serimpi in Surakarta palace. Rendra childhood to adolescence was spent in his native city. He started his education from kindergarten (1942) to finish his high school, high school (1952), in Catholic school, St. Joseph in the city of Solo. He also attended a seminar on literature at Harvard University at the invitation of the local government.

Rendra literary talents have been seen when he was in junior high school. At that time he had already showed his ability to write poetry, short stories and plays for various school activities. Not just writing, it turns out he was also an expert on the stage. He performed some of his plays, and mainly appeared as a very talented poet. He tops to publish his poetry in the mass media in 1952 through magazine. After that, his poems were flowing smoothly graced various magazines at the time, such as Story, Art, Base, Confrontation, and New Strategy. It continues as seen in magazines over the next decade, particularly magazines of the 60s and 70s. "Fake Leg" is the first drama, staged when he was in junior high, and "People in the Street Corner" is the first drama that got the award and first prize from the Office of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Yogyakarta. Rendra's works are not only famous in the country, but also abroad. Many of his works that have been translated into foreign languages, including English, Dutch, German, Japan and India. He also actively participates in festivals abroad, including the Rotterdam International Poetry Festival (1971 and 1979), The Valmiki International Poetry Festival, New Delhi (1985), Berliner Horizonte Festival, Berlin (1985), The First New York Festival of the Arts (1988), Spoleto Festival, Melbourne, Vagarth World Poetry Festival, Bhopal (1989), World Poetry Festival, Kuala Lumpur (1992), and Tokyo Festival (1995). many awards, including First Prize Dramatic Writing Competition of the Arts Section of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Yogyakarta (1954) BMKN National Literature Prize (1956); Arts Award from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia (1970); Gift Academy Jakarta (1975); Gift Foundation Books main, the Ministry of Education and Culture (1976), Adam Malik Award (1989), The SEA Write Award (1996) and Ahmad Bakri Award (2006).

New at the age of 24 years, he found his first love yourself Sunarti Kelvin.
